Teaching Kids Greetings in Spanish

When teaching your kids Spanish, learning greetings is so important. I like to teach this first as it is literally the first thing you say when meeting someone.

If you are a parent or someone who works with kids, teaching a new language can be challenging, especially if you don’t speak the language yourself. But, that’s okay! I’ve got you covered. :) I taught elementary Spanish for years and am in the process of teaching my own kids Spanish.

If you have been taking steps to integrate Spanish into your day to day routine, that’s awesome! But, it can be really helpful to explicitly teach vocabulary to kids and to have a way to assess their learning. That’s why I made a bunch of YouTube videos to teach my son Spanish. You can use them too, they are totally free!

Learning vocabulary is an important first step when learning a language, and learning how to greet people is a great start. Then, once your kids have built their vocabulary, they will be able to understand more and more Spanish.

Here are two greetings videos to get you started:

If you want activities and assessments for your kids to do along with the videos, you can purchase my Salutations Bundle through TeachersPayTeachers, a trusted website for teachers and parents to purchase educational materials.

One of my favorite things about this bundle is that you can teach your kids Spanish without having to already know Spanish yourself!

If you are wondering how to incorporate this into your day to day life, I will let you know what we do in my family. And, if it seems like it would work for you, then I would encourage you to give it a try.

How long it takes each child to learn something new can vary. But, I believe that repetition is the key to learning a new language. At our house, my son stays on each topic for about 2 weeks.

For the Salutations Bundle, his schedule looks like this:

Week 1

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Greetings

Friday | complete coloring activity (from the Salutations bundle)

Week 2

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Greetings

Friday | complete assessment (from the Salutations bundle)

Week 3

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Even More Greetings

Friday | complete coloring activity (from the Salutations bundle)

Week 4

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Even More Greetings

Friday | complete assessment (from the Salutations bundle)

Week 5

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Farewells

Friday | complete coloring activity (from the Salutations bundle)

Week 6

Monday - Thursday | Watch Spanish Video: Farewells

Friday | complete assessment (from the Salutations bundle)

If you know Spanish or if you also watch the videos, you can ask your kiddo about the words he or she is learning randomly to spot check progress. I usually ask my son about the words he is learning in the car before or after school.

Just keep in mind that learning a new language is a long process, but it is so worth it! Doing a little every day can yield amazing results!
